Arias looks to guarantee water for
Guanacaste for the next half-century
In one of his final commitments as president of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias announced an initiative to stabilize the water supply for the dry northwest province of Guanacaste.
At a cost of an estimated $17 million, Arias wants to ensure that households and industries don’t go without potable water, that farmers don’t watch their irrigation ditches go dry and that water pressure remains consistent, no matter the season.
“(This initiative) will have a positive impact by guaranteeing economic development in Guanacaste and improving the quality of life for all the residents of the province,” said the president’s brother, Rodrigo Arias, who is also the presidency minister. “It’s a great jump toward sustainable development.”
The project will consist of the construction of a 34-kilometer canal and 52 kilometers of secondary canals to reach 8,000 additional hectares of farmland, along with a giant cistern with a storage capacity of 85 billion cubic meters at an 800 hectare site located southwest of Bagaces.
“The water that will be accumulated in this cistern is the same that is used by the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity to generate electricity in plants at Arenal, Corobicí and Sandillal,” said Agriculture and Livestock Minister Javier Flores. The entire project will take into account the quickly developing tourist industry in the region, he added.
The Arias administration indicated that the project – including design and financing – is in the initial stages and will be continued by the incoming administration of president-elect and former vice president Laura Chinchilla.
